Remembering those we love


Carleton Rowe, Father of Barbara Rowe

Carleton Norwood Rowe, loving husband, father of three, and stepfather of one, passed away Feb. 27, 2021 at the age of 92.
Carl was born on April 1, 1928 in Waynesville, PA to Cleon and Kathryn Mae (Jury) Rowe. He was a Corporal/Technician Fourth Grade in the US Army and served as chief jailor of Sugamo Prison during the Japanese war trials. A graduate of Juniata College, he received his PhD in Chemistry from Penn State in 1955. After 5 years with Texaco, the rest of his notable career was spent as a tribologist with Mobil Oil. Along with many patents and awards, he was also a past president of The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE).
On June 28, 1956, he married Marian Brightbill and together they raised a daughter, Barbara, and two sons, David and Steven. On July 28, 1990, he remarried to Margaret Turner Dute who had a daughter, Marjorie.
Carl enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, serving as a church officer and volunteering at Northminster Presbyterian Church, and watching Penn State athletics. He was known for his intellect, work ethic, and his love for his family.
Carl was preceded in death by his father, Cleon, his mother, Kathryn, his brother, Richard, his sister, Joyce, and his stepdaughter, Marjorie. He is survived by his wife, Margie, his three children and six grandchildren. A service for the family will be held on a later date at the Sarasota National Cemetery

Nancy Carol Strowd, Mother of Carol Linker

Nancy Comeaux Strowd, 91, of Indianola and formerly of Isola, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, at Indywood Personal Care Home, Indianola. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3,  at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Inverness with the Rev. Jim Woods officiating. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements. 
Nancy was born April 23, 1929, in Memphis, Tennessee, and was the daughter of George Theodore Comeaux and Nancy Wallace VanMeter Comeaux. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, shopping with her friends, and taking walks. Nancy was a member of Dorsett Drive Christian Church, Indianola. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, William Earl Strowd Sr.
Nancy is survived by three children, Debra Strowd Weems (Jimmy), of Oxford, Carol Strowd Linker (Dan), of Waynesville, North Carolina, and Bill Strowd, of Senatobia; four grandchildren, Wes Strowd (Lauren), Colin Weems, Peyton Weems (Bailey), and Sara Brooks Weems; and one great-granddaughter, Ann Wesley Strowd. 


Eva Griffin, mother of Sherry Edwards

Eva Ruth Campbell Griffin, 95, longtime resident of Waldo, Florida, went to her heavenly home surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 30, 2021.

Mrs. Griffin was born on March 16, 1925 in Lowndesville, South Carolina to the late Bennett Graydon and Essie Childs Campbell. As a young lady she joined the U. S. Cadet Nurse Corps, where she met Mr. Richard Eppes Griffin to whom she was married for 41 years until his death in 1987. Mrs. Griffin worked for many years as an administrative assistant in various offices of UF Health, until her retirement in 1983. She was a very strong woman of faith, a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Waldo; she began every day in prayer and bible study. Mrs. Griffin was a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Waldo.
She was preceded in death by a great grandson, Brady Walden; a step-granddaughter, Shelly Bostwick, by her six sisters, Sybil, Lillian, Alliene, Anne, Vara and Jackie; and by her three brothers, Bennett, Gordon and Sonny.

She is survived by three daughters, Jean (Ken) Bostwick, Evelyn Walden and Sherry (David) Edwards; five grandchildren, Doug, Renee, Sam, Wesley and Sue; Nine Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ruth and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, February 8, 2021 at 2:00 P. M., in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 7, 2021 from 4 to 6 P. M., in the Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 North Main Street. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch.
