Local Events
Kids in the Creek is an annual program of Haywood Waterways that started in 1997. This event offers the 8th grade students of Haywood County a chance to explore their local waterway by learning about watershed hydrology, water chemistry, fish communities, aquatic bugs communities, and have a bunch of fun! We are looking for volunteers to assist students in/out of waders, aquatic bug collections and more. We have dry and wet volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are welcome to assist all day or half a day. No experience necessary.When: Sept. 11th – 12th (8:30 am – 2:30 pm); 13th (8:30am - 10:30am).
Where: Canton Recreation Park, (77 Penland St., Canton, NC 28716) last parking lot before the bridge by the baseball field.

Haywood Waterways Big Sweep Annual Stream Cleanup
Where: This year we have four locations for stream and roadside cleanups:
- Pigeon River and around downtown Canton: meet at Pigeon River Outfitters (13 Penland Street, Canton, NC 28716), 9:00 am - 12:00ish. Pigeon River Outfitters will provide free shuttles around town or upstream to get you started on your cleanup float. Tubes, kayaks, and canoes will be provided free of charge on a first come basis. You are also welcome to bring your own boat.
- Town of Maggie Valley: meet at the town hall (3987 Soco Road) at 9:00am. Cleanup time, about an hour and a half.
- Town of Clyde: meet at the town hall (8437 Carolina Blvd.) at 9:00 am. Cleanup time, about an hour and a half.
- Lower Jonathan Creek: meet at 9:00 am at the pull off on US 276 (J. Creek Rd.) across from the Exxon (5279 J. Creek Rd., Waynesville, NC 28785). Cleanup time, about an hour and a half.
